What is the problem of learning Russian?
Many students spend years trying to “understand” russian grammar: Verbs of motion – to go or to walk, should or must, perfect and imperfect kinds or cases. Then they get frustrated, discouraged, because they can’t speak or understand Russian fluently.
What’s the problem?
The problem is that many russian language courses focus too much on grammar. Language, in this case, is learned theoretically. You can’t learn a language like algebra, geometry or history by memorizing formulas and dates. Language needs to be understood and felt. It must be lived, thought and spoken.
Language is not learned by purely theoretical analysis of grammar. A language is a skill that has to be learned just like learning to play the piano, swim, dance, ride a bike or play soccer. How do you learn a language? Study the language on a regular and disciplined basis. Spend enough time in the language. Try to get a little better every day.
